On Vörösmarty Square, the wooden stalls are packed tight against one another. Honey biscuits, cinnamon and roasted chestnuts mingle in the air, a cup of mulled wine keeps your hands busy, and Hungarian families do their holiday shopping all around you. Budapest in December sets the tone for the rest of the trip.
The tour crosses three capitals in nine days. In Budapest, the guided visit of the castle district takes in the Royal Palace, Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion, with the Danube below and the Chain Bridge in the distance. In Vienna, two free days are barely enough for the city's twenty-odd Christmas markets: City Hall Square, the Freyung with its Christ Child market open since 1772, the Belvedere gardens. A 72-hour public transport pass is handed out on arrival, so moving from one district to the next is easy.
In Prague, the tree on Old Town Square watches over the chalets and the smell of gingerbread. The last full day climbs to Hradcany, where the visit of the castle district ends in the Golden Lane, a row of small coloured houses built against the rampart.

Itinerary
Montreal: departure. Meet at Montreal-Trudeau international airport for an overnight flight to Europe, with a connection. Meals on board.
Budapest. Arrival in Budapest, welcomed by your guide and transferred to the hotel. In the evening, a welcome dinner to meet the group. (D)
Budapest: sightseeing. This morning, off to Buda, on the west bank of the Danube, for a guided visit of the castle district: the Royal Palace, Matthias Church, the Fisherman's Bastion and the Chain Bridge. Free afternoon at the large Christmas market on Vörösmarty Square, where the stalls overflow with Hungarian specialties. In the evening, an optional dinner cruise on the Danube to see Budapest lit up. (B)
Budapest – Vienna (245 km). Drive to the Austrian capital. Guided walking tour of the historic centre and St Stephen's Cathedral, a baroque masterpiece, then a stroll through the small Christmas market on Stephansplatz. Your guide hands you a 72-hour public transport pass. Free evening. (B)
Vienna: free day. Vienna has some twenty Christmas markets and more than 1,000 stalls. On City Hall Square, everything is lit up and smells of biscuits and hot punch. On the Freyung, the Christ Child market has carried the tradition since 1772 with its nativity scenes and glass and ceramic pieces. The gardens of Belvedere Palace host an Advent market of traditional crafts. (B)
Vienna: free day. Continue exploring the city or join the optional excursion to Schönbrunn Palace, the Habsburgs' summer residence, whose courtyard hosts a Christmas market. In the evening, an optional dinner followed by a concert of the finest works of Strauss and Mozart. (B)
Vienna – Prague (330 km). Drive to the Czech capital and discover its main Christmas markets: the Old Town market, with its huge lit tree, and the one on Wenceslas Square. A good moment to try gingerbread, grilled sausages and pork slowly roasted on a spit. In the evening, an optional traditional dinner with folk entertainment. (B)
Prague: sightseeing. Transfer to the Hradcany district for a guided walking tour of the castle district, once the seat of the Bohemian monarchs: the Romanesque St George's Basilica, the old royal palace and the picturesque Golden Lane. Free afternoon to wander through Mala Strana, the city's second-oldest quarter. (B)
Prague – Montreal. Transfer to Prague airport for the return flight to Montreal, with a connection. Meals on board. (B)

Four in all: the dinner cruise on the Danube in Budapest ($240), the visit of Schönbrunn Palace and its Christmas market in Vienna (EUR 38), the Strauss and Mozart dinner concert in Vienna (EUR 156) and the traditional dinner with entertainment in Prague ($115). The Budapest cruise and the Prague dinner must be booked before departure; the others are paid locally, in cash.
