In Bamberg, the tasting starts with a glass of Glühwein and a sausage, standing in the cold, and ends with a Rauchbier, the smoked beer the town has been brewing for centuries. Nobody walks away from that one indifferent. It is one of the moments where this tour stops being sightseeing and becomes something you taste.
The route runs from Munich down to Basel in eight days and takes in eight Christmas markets. The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz opens the trip under a tree nearly 30 metres tall. Nuremberg follows with its hilltop castle and its gingerbread, Rothenburg with its ramparts and its Reiterlesmarkt, Strasbourg with 300 stalls and a tradition dating back to 1570. Colmar, Freiburg and Basel close the loop between Alsace, the Black Forest and Switzerland.
Six guided visits are included, led by local guides, and three tastings punctuate the road: gingerbread in Nuremberg, mulled wine and sausages in Bamberg, smoked beer in the same town. No optional excursions are offered, because everything is already in the programme.

Montreal: departure. Meet at Montreal-Trudeau international airport for an overnight flight to Europe. Meals on board.
Munich. Arrival in the capital of Bavaria, welcomed by your guide and driver, then a guided walking tour of the old town and of the Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz, Munich's oldest Christmas market. In front of the new city hall, a tree nearly 30 metres tall carries more than 2,500 candles. Welcome dinner in the evening. (D)
Munich – Nuremberg (170 km). Drive to Nuremberg and guided visit of the old town, its churches, its fountains and its castle set on a rock. Rest of the day free in one of Germany's most famous Christmas markets, with a tasting of Lebkuchen, the traditional holiday gingerbread. (B)
Nuremberg – Bamberg – Rothenburg (155 km). Excursion into Upper Franconia, beer country. In Bamberg, a medieval town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, guided walking tour and discovery of the Christmas markets. Tasting of Glühwein, the spiced mulled wine, with sausages, then a tasting of Rauchbier, the town's typical smoked beer. Drive to Rothenburg and check-in for 2 nights. (B)
Rothenburg: excursion to Dinkelsbühl (100 km). Visit of the small medieval town of Dinkelsbühl, ringed by towers and ramparts, then back along the Romantic Road to Rothenburg. Guided walking tour of this walled town above the Tauber river, and free time at the Reiterlesmarkt, reputed to be one of Germany's finest Christmas markets. The Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas village and the Schneeball, the local pastry, are both worth a stop. (B)
Rothenburg – Strasbourg (270 km). Off to the Alsatian capital, known for its foie gras and its wines. Guided walking tour of the old town, nicknamed France's Christmas capital. Free time for lunch and for the Advent markets, a tradition going back to 1570: more than 300 stalls spread over some ten sites. Photo stop in front of the great lit tree on Place Kléber. (B)
Strasbourg – Colmar – Freiburg – Basel (200 km). Drive to Colmar and a walk through the historic centre, between lively lanes and decorated windows where cinnamon, star anise and citrus mingle. Cross into Germany for a guided visit of Freiburg, capital of the Black Forest, whose Christmas market gives pride of place to wood, ceramics and blown glass. Continue to Basel and its Christmas market, the oldest in Switzerland, home of the Läckerli, biscuits made with honey, spices and almonds. Farewell dinner and overnight at the hotel. (B, D)
